Histopathological
analysis is a common clinical procedure for diagnosing the presence, type, and
progression of diseases such as cancer. Histology
is a critical tool in medicine for cancer diagnosis. Using biopsy-derived
tissue slides, pathologists manually identify the most progressed regions and
examine nuclear morphology, among other tissue and cellular properties.
However, manual examination and decision-making that may potentially contain
millions of cells can be time-consuming and subjective. Therefore
automated histology analysis could have a profound effect on healthcare
quality, availability, and cost.
The size and shape of the cells are important
for cancer diagnosis; however, the quality of the image is not clear enough for
computer to measure directly. The edge
has to be detected by
detection algorithms or by manual delineation. But these systems are far from clinical acceptance since the
automatic detection of edges in images with a low signal-to-noise can be
difficult.
Therefore,
one key component which is the histology image quality is missing for automatic
diagnosis. Fortunately, we have
developed new micro-image technology to produce high quality image. The automatic
diagnosis system can finally be established to the level of clinical acceptance.
